Shan has over a decade of experience in analyzing China’seconomic policies and advising multinationals as well as financialinstitutions. With expertise across a wide range of domains, Shan helps clientsconnect the dots and identify the key changes underneath cyclical dynamics.

Prior to Hutong Research, Shan was a partner of Plenum ChinaResearch 2019-2023, covering industrial policies with a focus on energytransition, as well as other structural changes in China such as those in thehousing and labor markets.

Before Plenum, Shan worked at Rhodium Group, where sheexamined China’s economic reform in depth and designed quantitative indicatorsto track progress. Via years of close monitoring, Shan has gained comprehensiveinsights in many sectors including trade, investment, innovation, climate, evenantitrust and land.

Earlier, Shan worked at Deloitte, where she helped multinationalsnavigate tax rules across the Pacific with strategic planning and structuring.There, Shan developed first-hand experience in cross-border transactions andhow policies affect firms’ financials.

Shan holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and financefrom Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and a master’s degree in publicadministration from Columbia University. Shan lived in Hong Kong for over tenyears, speaks Cantonese, and had also lived in New York, London, and Xi’an—herhometown.

Yan Xiong is an Associate Professor of Accounting and Finance at the University of Hong Kong. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on the economics of big data, algorithms, and their implications for the economy. Yan's work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Economic Theory. In 2022, she received the RCFS Rising Scholar Award. Additionally, Yan serves as the principal investigator for several research grants, including those from the HKRGC and the NSFC Excellent Young Scientist (EYS) Scheme.

Zhipeng Cai is an executive director in Morgan Stanley’s China economics research team who joined the firm in 2017. Zhipeng has written extensively on China’s leverage cycle and structural transitions.

He is part of the Asia Pacific team that has persistently ranked top for Economics in the Institutional Investor All-Asia Survey. Zhipeng holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a PhD in economics from the University of Hong Kong.
